Cost, timing and what to ask
The 8 questions that actually decide roof repair, answered with estimated ranges.
Note 01What can you use to patch a roof in the rain?
Something temporary: a heavy tarp lapped well past the damage and fixed so wind cannot get under it, or a temporary seal over a failed flashing, put on by someone who can reach it without standing on wet tile or a soft deck. Roofing cement smeared on a wet surface rarely holds. Whatever goes on in the rain is a stopgap, and the permanent repair is made once the roof is dry.
Note 02How long can you leave a leaking roof?
A small drip that stopped when the rain did, caught and marked, can usually wait for a dry-day repair. Water near a light fixture, a ceiling that bulges, or a leak that grows through the storm cannot wait at all. In Rialto the next rain may be weeks away, which makes it tempting to forget; the deck under a leak stays damp long after the ceiling looks dry.
Note 03What is the average cost of roof repair in California?
A California-wide 2026 guide puts most minor roof repairs at an estimated $350 to $1,800, and major structural repairs at $1,800 to $5,000 or more. National figures land in a similar place, $300 to $3,000 with an average around $900. Your figure follows what the roof needs once it has been seen dry.
Note 04When to worry about a roof leak?
Straight away if the water is near anything electrical, the ceiling sags, or the leak gets faster as the storm goes on. Worry too if a leak appears in the first rain after summer: it usually means a boot, a flashing or a valley failed during the dry months and has been open ever since.
Note 05How much should I pay for a roof repair?
For a minor repair, an estimated $350 to $1,800 on California 2026 figures; a published Rialto page puts leak repair at $1,200 to $3,000. Pay for the repair separately from any stopgap, and only once the roof has been seen dry and the scope is on a written quote.
Note 06What is the cheapest way to repair a roof?
Fix what actually failed, once, on a dry day. A patch made in the rain usually has to be done again, and the water that gets past it in the meantime costs more than the patch saved. Stop the water cheaply with a stopgap, then pay for one proper repair.
Note 07What to look for when choosing a roofing contractor?
A CSLB license in the C-39 roofing class, which California requires once the total contract price reaches $1,000, with the number on the written quote. Then someone who traces the leak before sealing anything, separates the stopgap from the repair in writing, and waits for a dry roof to make the permanent fix.
Note 08Do you need a permit to get your roof redone?
In Rialto, yes, for a re-roof. The City of Rialto's Building and Safety division issues re-roof permits under a Re-Roof Requirements handout dated January 1, 2026; only permitted structures qualify, and a detached garage needs its own permit. The handout sets stricter wind and fire requirements north of the 210. For a smaller repair, ask the City if you are unsure whether it counts.
